About Hanwell

Why hanwellknitting?

Well, Hanwell is where I live. It's a suburb of London and not well known to the uninitiated, but it's quite a remarkable place in a quiet way.

Our postcode area is W7 and we're the most westerly of the true London postcodes. Cross the canal and you're in UB.

The first recorded use of the name is in 959, and archaeology shows that Hanwell has indeed been settled since Anglo-Saxon times. As a stop on the main road from London to Oxford, it was on an important route for travellers, and not surprisingly inns sprang up, where those travellers could be fed, watered & change their horses. Many of the local pubs are on sites that have been home to a hostelry of hundreds of years.

Away from the main road, Hanwell was mostly rural in character until very recently. It still has an astonishing amount of green space for a London borough. Our local church, St. Mary's, poses as the rural setting for Mark & Sophie's wedding in the UK comedy Peep Show!

Hanwell is on the Great Western Railway and the Grand Union Canal, and is home to two of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's most remarkable engineering feats - the Wharncliffe Viaduct and the Three Bridges aqueduct.

Unlike many London areas, Hanwell is a place where you know your neighbours. It's home to an incredibly friendly & close-knit community, and we love living where we live. If you've ever wondered whether those soap-opera pubs, where all the locals go whatever age or social group, and everyone knows each other's business, really exist, try our local, the Fox!
